NOVA SCOTIA and NEWFOUNDLAND - 11 Days
NEWFOUNDLAND ONLY - 8 Days
- Cape Breton's Cabot Trail and Highlands National Park
- Gros Morne National Park and Avalon Peninsula
DAY 1-2
The first leg of this exciting two-province tour includes some of the world's most scenic coastline. The highland region of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island is renowned for spectacular coastal mountain scenery and a variety of wildlife, including moose, bald eagles, and whales. We explore the highland coastline via the renowned Cabot Trail parkway which follows the margin of the highland plateau around the northern tip of the island and through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
DAY 3-6
From Cape Breton, we take a cruise aboard the overnight ferry to Port-aux-Basques Newfoundland and drive north to Gros Morne National Park. The park is situated in a scenic coastal area of the Long Range Mountains that is transected by glacially carved fjords. The Tablelands, one of the Park's most prominent and intriguing landforms, is a flat topped mountain comprised of rock from earth's upper mantle, brought to the surface when the continents collided over 400 million years ago. Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because the Tablelands provided critical evidence that supports the Theory of Continental Drift. While exploring Gros Morne and its splendid landscapes, we will look for moose and take a cruise ($ included) on the fabled Western Brook Pond: a fabulous land-locked fjord with towering cliffs and amazing waterfalls.
DAY 7-10
Next we cross the Island's vast, scenic interior to the Avalon Peninsula on Newfoundland's east coast. On the peninsula, we visit Cape Saint Mary's and Witless Bay Ecological Reserves which is home to over 2 million seabirds and hundreds of humpback whales. Witless Bay's charming Atlantic puffins, and Cape St. Mary's spectacular northern gannets share these amazing reserves with many other species of fascinating seabirds, including common murres, razorbills, and black legged kittiwakes. A 2.5 hour cruise in the Witless Bay Reserve, (extra $) is a superb opportunity to see whales and seabirds, and a visit to the Cape St. Mary's northern gannet colony ranks among the world's best wildlife experiences. On the coastal barrens, sighting the herd of woodland caribou rounds out the peninsula's list of amazing natural wonders. We also spend time in the colourful, historic city of St. John's - North America's oldest city - and we make a stop at the most easterly point in North America: Cape Spear.
DAY 11
Return to North Sydney Nova Scotia via the overnight ferry from Argentia and on to Halifax.
Departs Halifax, Nova Scotia and includes two ferry crossings: Sydney to Port-aux-Basques (6 hrs) and Argentia to Sydney (14 hrs).
