NOVA SCOTIA: AUTUMN COLOURS TOUR. 6 Days
Cape Breton Island and Eastern Mainland
This Nova Scotia Fall Colours Tour features some of the most scenic coastal areas of the province including one of North America's esteemed attractions: the Cabot Trail. In October, Nova Scotia's coastal highlands and picturesque countryside are an artist's palette of breathtaking colour.
DAY 1
On the Eastern Mainland beside the Northumberland Strait, we visit the historic Town of Pictou where Nova Scotia's first Scottish residents settled in 1773. In this scenic seaside town, our itinerary includes a waterfront walk and a stop at the Hector Heritage Quay Interpretative Centre. The Heritage Quay tells the story of Scottish immigration and settlement in Nova Scotia and includes an exact replica of the ship Hector which carried the first settlers to Pictou. From Pictou we tour the scenic Antigonish Highlands coastal road, stopping at Cape George lighthouse for a panoramic view of St. Georges Bay and the distant shores of Cape Breton Island: the next destination on our itinerary.
DAY 2-5
Our tour of Cape Breton Island includes the island's Gaelic heartland, Mabou, and
the distinctive Acadian Region further north is one of the areas where Nova Scotia's deported Acadians found a new homeland following their tragic deportation in 1755. Here, we begin our tour of the Cabot Trail: one of the most scenic coastal mountain drives in the world. The Cabot Trail snakes and winds along the shoreline, through the coastal mountains, and up onto the highland plateau of the Highlands National Park. The scenery is spectacular, and moose, bald eagles, and pilot whales are often sighted. An optional whale watching cruise (extra $) is available in season.
DAY 6
The next segment of the tour is devoted to on the eastern side of the island. Fortress Louisbourg, the largest historic reconstruction in North America, was a formidable French stronghold in Acadia. Louisbourg fell to the British in 1758 ending 150 years of conflict between the two colonizing nations in Atlantic Canada. Returning to the mainland, we follow the scenic Eastern Shore coastal road to Halifax, stopping at Sherbrooke Historic Village: a superb living history museum which depicts life in a small Nova Scotia community at the end of the nineteenth century. Departs Halifax.
