NOVA SCOTIA, NEW BRUNSWICK, and PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND: 7 Days.
Three Province - Maritime Provinces - Tour
Day 1-2
Our first destination is Nova Scotia's Grand Pré National Historic Site on Fundy's Minas Basin. This exceptional site commemorates the tragic deportation of the French Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1755 at the outset of the Seven Years War which permanently quashed France's colonial ambitions in North America. This eastern end of the Annapolis Valley is a scenic, pastoral fruit growing region with extensive dykelands that were originally reclaimed from sea during the seventeenth century by enterprising Acadian farmers.
The first permanent European settlement in Canada, Port Royal, is our next stop. In 1605, the French planted a fortress and settlement on the shore of the Annapolis Basin marking the beginning of the eventful and colourful colonial history of Nova Scotia, or l'Acadie, as it was called by the French.
Day 3-5
On Day 3, we board the ferry for a 3 hour cruise across the Bay of Fundy to New Brunswick's historic Loyalist city - Saint John - then make our way along the Fundy Shore to the picturesque seaside village of St. Martins. From St. Martins, we explore the scenic Fundy Trail Parkway. During the golden age of sail, this dramatic and beautiful coastline was the mainstay of a thriving logging and shipbuilding industry.
Beyond St. Martins, we tour more of the fabulous Fundy Shore, including Fundy National Park, the fascinating, tide-sculpted Hopewell Rocks, and the scenic Chignecto Shoreline. At Mary's Point we hope to witness a spectacular natural phenomena: the migration of millions of semi-palmated sandpipers.
En route to Prince Edward Island, via the amazing 13km/9mi Confederation Bridge which spans the Northumberland Strait, we visit Fort Beauséjour National Historic Site on the New Brunswick-Nova Scotia border. This excellent museum, a former French fortress, recalls a pivotal period of colonial history. Beauséjour was captured by the British in 1755, the Acadians were expelled later in the same year, and 3 years later Fortress Louisbourg fell. The contest over Atlantic Canada thus ended after 150 years of conflict.
Day 6-7
Our tour of Prince Edward Island includes a visit to Green Gables - home of Anne of Green Gables - at Cavendish, and a road tour of some of the Island's scenic, pastoral countryside. We return to Nova Scotia by ferry, stopping at the historic Town of Pictou where a superb waterfront interpretation centre recalls the first Scottish settlement in Nova Scotia.
