NOVA SCOTIA WALKING HOLIDAY: 7 Days
Bay of Fundy and Eastern Shore
This tour offers agreat opportunity to experience the diversity and beauty of two of mainland Nova Scotia's distinct coastal regions.
DAY 1-4
The sparsely populated Eastern Shore, exposed to the open Atlantic Ocean, is a jagged, island-studded shoreline with lots of superb coastal hiking opportunities. The barren headlands, capes, picturesque inlets, and islands that we explore along this coast are products of the last ice age. The land was severely eroded and modified by the action of glaciers which melted only 10,000 years ago. When the ice melted, sea level rose over 100 metres flooding low lying land - the valleys and gorges - excavated by the flowing ice. The flooded areas are today's scenic harbours and inlets, while the higher ground consisting of mounds of glacially deposited material (drumlins ) or erosion resistant rock formations, are now islands, headlands, and capes.
DAY 5-7
The fabulous Bay of Fundy Shoreis our venue for the next three days. Along the shoreline of the Minas Basin we will witness the rhythmic oscillation and awesome dimensions of the world's highest tides. As the great tide ebbs, we will walk on the bottom of the sea where spectacular rock formations disclose a geological record that includes the dawning of the age of dinosaurs and the rifting of the super continent Pangea. At Cape d'Or, a scenic lighthouse warns mariners of a treacherous headland where the eight cubic kilometres of tidal waters that pour through the Minas Channel churn and roar in a vivid display of natural forces. Tour departs Halifax.
